Early Signs of Common Crop Diseases Farmers Should Not Ignore

Learn how to notice leaf spots, wilting, fungal growth and other early crop-disease symptoms before damage spreads across the field.

Early Signs of Common Crop Diseases Farmers Should Not Ignore

Crop diseases are easier to manage when symptoms are identified early. Regular field observation can prevent a small affected patch from becoming a major loss.

Symptoms worth checking immediately

  • Circular, angular or rapidly expanding leaf spots
  • White powder, dark fungal growth or rust-coloured pustules
  • Sudden wilting despite adequate soil moisture
  • Yellowing that begins in a clear pattern across the leaf
  • Rotting near the root, collar, fruit or stem

Do not diagnose from one leaf alone

Inspect multiple plants and different parts of the field. Note the crop stage, recent weather, irrigation, fertilizer application and products already sprayed.

Share clear photographs

Take one close photograph of the symptom, one of the complete plant and one wider field photograph. This context helps an agronomist distinguish disease from nutrient deficiency, insect damage or water stress.

Avoid mixing products based only on guesswork. Confirm the likely cause, appropriate molecule, dose and application timing first.
