Good seed selection is the first major decision of the Kharif season. The right variety must suit your field, expected rainfall, sowing window and harvest plan—not only the highest advertised yield.
Start with your field and water availability
- Choose varieties suited to rainfed or irrigated conditions.
- Consider drainage in low-lying fields before selecting paddy or soybean.
- Match crop duration with the likely monsoon window and the next crop in your rotation.
Check the seed packet carefully
Buy sealed seed from a trusted source. Confirm the crop, variety, batch number, germination percentage, treatment details and validity date. Always keep the original bill.
Plan seed treatment and sowing
Ask an agronomist whether the seed is already treated and whether any additional treatment is appropriate. Follow the recommended seed rate and spacing instead of increasing seed quantity unnecessarily.
